A. Scott College Prep Program in Hamtramck High School
Welcome to our website: Letter from Al Alsaidy, Program Director
June 2011
Dear Visitor,
Welcome to the A. Scott Foundation College Prep Program website!
In the Spring of 2009, the A. Scott Foundation founded the CosMos Leadership Development Program. With tremendous support from various University of MIchigan student organizations (Cirkle K, The Ginsberg Center, Rotaract), the development program began its work at Hamtramck High School in Hamtramck, Michigan.
The project was designed for targeted students with the goal of increasing college enrollment rates and helping to develop future leaders. This dynamic educational pilot-project brought together student volunteers and mentors from the University of Michigan with 30 students from Hamtramck High School for a two-year, comprehensive college-prep program that provided ACT preparation, academic support, and peer mentorship. By pairing these academic components with a strong emphasis on community service and involvement, the CosMos program aimed to assist its participants in becoming both successful college students, as well as positive leaders in their community. At the conclusion of the program, CosMos students graduated in the top of their class, making up 7 of the top 10 students ranked by grade point average, including the Valedictorian and both Salutorians. 80% of the participants in the program will be attending 4-year universities this fall, among which include the University of Michigan - Ann Arbor, Wayne State University, Michigan State University, and University of Michigan - Dearborn.
In the Winter of 2011, the second phase of the program was founded. The current cycle, renamed as the A. Scott Foundation College Prepatory Program in honor of Andrew Crawford, is well underway with tutoring in Hamtramck High School planned to phase in throughout the summer, with an official start date in September.
